Overview

Now regarded as a landmark of Scotland’s national literature, Robert Burns’ “Tam O’Shanter” is a rollicking mock-epic poem about a drunk ne’er-do-well farmer who riles a grisly coven of witches and warlocks and barely escapes with his life. The poem celebrates the spirit and energy of the Scottish people, their relish of strong drink and the communal life of the pub, as well as their deep belief in the reality of the paranormal. The historic achievement of “Tam O’Shanter,” has less to do with its grand sense of comic storytelling and more to do with how that adventure is told. In relating the story of Tam O’Shanter in the Scots language itself, the poem became a bold expression of a country’s pride in its own culture at a pivotal time when Scotland struggled to define a national literature, particularly as it stood in the deep shadow of Great Britain with its centuries of internationally respected literature. The poem was originally published in 1791 as part of an ambitious decade-long project in which Burns helped compile the folk stories, ballads, and heroic legends of the Scottish people. With its artful blend of raunchy humor and gothic horror, cinematic-scale adventure and reassuringly pithy wisdom, “Tam O’Shanter” became a model for faux-gothic storytelling that left a legacy for writers such as Washington Irving. Poet Biography

Robert Burns was born January 25, 1759 in the remote village of Alloway on Scotland’s west coast. His father was a tenant farmer, and with a large family of seven children, they always struggled financially. Burns, showing remarkable promise in his homeschooling regimen, attended school for only a single year before returning to help out on the failing farm. After the death of his father when Burns was in his early 20s, management of the farm fell to him and a brother. As a teenager, Burns was a voracious reader, most particularly the sonnets of William Shakespeare and the theological epics of John Milton, although he wondered whether these works, in standard English, were actually part of his cultural identity. He began to craft original poems before he was 20. He was a Romantic by disposition, and most of these early poems were lyrics about the Scottish countryside or the wonder of love and almost always written in the lilting music of the Scot Gaelic language. His first collection, Poems, Written Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, appeared in 1785, the year after his father’s death. The collection enjoyed wide sales and immediate critical endorsement. Burns was hailed as a kind of curiosity, a rustic backwoods farmer with the lyrical control and philosophical insights of an accomplished poet.

In 1788, Burns and his family relocated to London to take up a government clerical position while he began work on what would become a most ambitious project: to gather and catalogue more than three centuries of Scottish ballads, folk tales, and regional poetry to help define the cultural identity of the nation, which had long been considered a part of Great Britain. Deeply moved by the wealth of the material he had archived, Burns returned to his native Scotland. Drawing on that tradition, Burns produced over the next ten years a prolific body of original poems, among them the epic adventure tale of “Tam O’Shanter.” These poems were written in a colorful, idiomatic Scottish dialect and were often structured like songs, which made them easy to transcribe into music (among the more famous is “Auld Lang Syne,” a New Year’s Eve classic). They reflected Scottish life: its agrarian culture, its sense of tight-knitted families, its embrace of friendship and drink, its fascination with the supernatural, and its deep love of the forbidding Scottish countryside.

By his mid-30s, Burns began to experience symptoms of heart disease. Though his condition worsened, he never stopped writing. At his death in 1796 at the age of 37, he was widely hailed as Scotland’s national Poet. Indeed, today his birthday is celebrated as an unofficial national holiday.

When chapmen billies leave the street,  

And drouthy neibors, neibors meet,   

As market days are wearing late,   

An' folk begin to tak the gate;  

While we sit bousing at the nappy, 

And getting fou and unco happy,  

We think na on the lang Scots miles, 

The mosses, waters, slaps, and styles, 

That lie between us and our hame, 

Where sits our sulky sullen dame. 

Gathering her brows like gathering storm, 

Nursing her wrath to keep it warm.

This truth fand honest Tam o' Shanter, 

As he frae Ayr ae night did canter, 

(Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a town surpasses 

For honest men and bonie lasses.)

O Tam! had'st thou but been sae wise, 

As ta'en thy ain wife Kate's advice!  

She tauld thee weel thou was a skellum, 

A blethering, blustering, drunken blellum; 

That frae November till October,

Ae market-day thou was nae sober;

That ilka melder, wi' the miller,

Thou sat as lang as thou had siller;

That every naig was ca'd a shoe on, 

The smith and thee gat roaring fou on;

And at his elbow, Souter Johnny,

The storm without might rair and rustle, 

Tam did na mind the storm a whistle.

E'en drown'd himsel' amang the nappy! 

As bees flee hame wi' lades o' treasure,

There was ae winsome wench and waulie, 

That night enlisted in the core,

In “Tam O’Shanter,” the opening cliché “it was a dark and stormy night” happens to ring true: the poem opens on a dark and stormy late October night in the Scottish town of Ayrshire. Tam O’Shanter, a farmer who has brought his harvest into town celebrates with his cronies in the tavern. He knows it would be best to start the long trip home not just because of the inclement weather but because his wife, Kate, admonished him not to be late. Even in the pub, surrounded by his friends around a roaring fire, he can feel Kate’s rising anger, “Gathering her brows like a gathering storm / Nursing her wrath to keep it warm” (Lines 11-12). But the ale is flowing, the talk is animated, the pub inviting—Tam delays, “a man so happy / Even drowned in ale” (Line 54).

The time comes when Tam knows he must head home. Reluctantly he mounts his trusty horse Meg and heads down the road into the stiff wind and howling rain. He knows he must pass Alloway’s Church, long abandoned and, according to town legend, haunted by spirits from Hell, a forbidding place where “ghosts and owls nightly cry” (Line 89). When he passes the church, he is surprised to see light flooding from inside; the church seems “a blaze” (Line 103).

Emboldened by alcohol, Tam tethers his horse and creeps to a church window and sees therein an “incredible sight” (Line 115). Witches and warlocks, dressed in black, dance in the church to the hornpipe being blown on bagpipes by none other than Satan himself in the shape of a “shaggy dog, black, grim, and large” (Line 122). To the harsh squeal of the bagpipes, the demon spirits cavort. Scattered about the church, Tam notes, are grim memento mori objects of murder and mayhem, hacked bones, heavy chains, bloodied tomahawks, swords “with murder crusted” (Line 137), a “garter with which a baby strangled” and a “knife a father’s throat had mangled (Lines 138-139). Most terrifying of all, however, are three lawyers’ tongues, turned inside out, and three priests’ rotten, black hearts.

Tam is spellbound. He watches the crazy dervishes of the old witches and warlocks until they are thick with sweat. Caught up in the frenzied dancing, the witches begin to strip off their clothes. Tam is repulsed by the withered witches, “ugly enough to suckle a foal” (Line 165). It is, then that Tam’s eye is caught by a young, beautiful witch. As Tam watches in carnal delight, this young witch, named Nannie, strips down to her “short underskirt” (Line 178). Tam is beside himself, “bewitched” (Line 188), driven with the sudden itch of lust. He cannot help himself. He yells out loudly and carelessly, “Well done, short skirt!” (Line 194).

The “hellish legions” (Line 198), suddenly aware they are being watched, turn their attention to Tam. “Catch the thief” (Line 203), Nannie yells. They all head outside to chase Tam down. Now panicked, certain they will drag him to hell as “roast [him] like a herring” (Line 207), Tam throws himself on Meg and tries to gallop away as fast as he, but his exit is hampered by the muddy roads. He heads to the bridge over the River Doon, the road out of town, knowing that demons cannot cross running water. He would be safe if he gets to the bridge. But Nannie, flying furiously, is fast approaching Tam. Desperate to stop him, as Tam lurches onto the bridge, Nannie reaches out and snags Meg’s tail, pulling it out, which “left poor Maggie scarce a stump” (Line 223).

Tam is safe. The Narrator steps in to offer wisdom: whenever you are inclined to imbibe strong drink or are tempted by short skirts, he cautions the reader to “Remember Tam O’Shanter’s mare” (Line 229).
