Discussion/Analysis Prompt

In traditional Gothic literature, the protagonist rescues the damsel in distress, but Hawthorne deviates from this traditional trope. Why did Hawthorne choose to depict Giovanni as he did? How would the story be different if he were a typical Gothic hero?

Teaching Suggestion: If students are unfamiliar with a typical Gothic hero, it might be helpful to define him as a nobleman trying to win the hand of a young lady, rescuing her from danger along the way.

Differentiation Suggestion: For advanced learners, consider having them write an alternative ending to “Rappaccini’s Daughter” in which Beatrice is saved.
